If you're like me, you're probably really tired of hearing about high gas prices, the recession, bad housing markets, and every other depressing topic in the news lately. We're all looking for ways to save money... but frankly, I have NO intention of giving up my internet or cell phone just to save a few bucks — and I'm tired of reading "money saving tips" with those kinds of suggestions.

This blog is dedicated to "the rest of us" -- people like you and me who want to live "normal" lives without having to eat Ramen noodles seven days a week. My goal is to provide you with 997+ ways to save money without going crazy! Contributions welcome!

Do you REALLY need a zillion ‘anytime’ minutes on your cell phone?

Cynthia July 11th, 2008

I got to thinking this week… even though Gregory travels a lot for his job, we’re still not using all those cell phone minutes we pay for each month.

I love Alltel, and I’ve had them forever, so I don’t plan to leave them anytime soon. HOWEVER, there’s really no reason for us to be paying over $100 each month when we’re using so few minutes. I guess — up until now — I’ve kept us on the same plan “just in case.” Talk about a waste of money! Helloooooo!

So, I just got off the phone with Alltel. Our bill will go from $112 per month to about $60. Pretty cool, eh?

You might consider doing the same thing if you’re not using all the benefits under your current cell phone plan.

Learn a Language for Free

Cynthia July 5th, 2008

Been thinking about taking a German class at your local community college? STOP! Wait! Do this, instead!

I found this great website in my recent Woman’s Day magazine… it’s pretty cool. You can learn the basics of Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, and more for FREE at www.bbc.co.uk/languages.

If you’re planning to travel anytime soon — or if you have a pal in some other country that you’d like to impress, consider taking one of the classes on that website. I was pretty excited to find it.

OH, and if you have iTunes, you can also find many different podcasts that’ll help you learn other languages, as well. So… today’s your day to be enlightened… for free! Have fun!

Get Your Credit Report for Free

Cynthia July 5th, 2008

There are a lot of companies out there willing to provide a credit report for a fee, but did you know that you’re allowed to get one report every 12 months FOR FREE from EACH of the three credit bureaus?

Yep. It’s true. But you gotta be careful, because there are hundreds of companies that have registered websites with similar wording… but as I said, they’ll ultimately end up charging you.

The ONLY website that provides this free service is www.AnnualCreditReport.com. It’s sponsored by the 3 reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian), and they’re all mandated by law to provide the free report once a year to anybody who wants it. Take advantage of it — this is a great way to keep track of your credit rating AND keep an eye out for potential signs of identity theft. (If you find ANY incorrect information on your report, PLEASE be sure to contact the source of the wrong info and get it straightened out ASAP. That’s a telltale sign that somebody may be trying to steal your identity!)

By the way, AnnualCreditReport.com will offer you some options that require a fee (credit monitoring, etc.), but if you simply want your credit report, just ignore all the other stuff, and get it for free.
